The everyday term for what Russ explained is, "the zero property of addition." Any number + 0 = that number, as in your equation.

(And the multiplication property he describes is often known as "the identity property of multiplication," where any number times 1 equals that number.)

Within the set of real numbers, under the addition operation, adding the additive neutral element (zero) to any member of that set does not change that member or its membership in the set.

 

NOTE:  If you were talking multiplication as the operation, then the multiplicative neutral element would be +1 since it would not change either the magnitude or the sign of the original element.  So the operation you are talking about is very important.
