If 80% did not know the names of their representative, that means 20% did know (because 100% - 80 % = 20%). So now all you need to know is what 20% of 1000 is. There are two easy ways to do this. First, you could do it in your head, this is the way that's probably easiest (10% of anything means you move the decimal point one place to the left: so for 1000.0 you move the decimal point left one place and that gives you 100.00, then multiply by 2 to get 200 (100*2 = 200). The other way to do this is to use a calculator. To find a percentage of a number, do the following: convert the percent to a decimal (to do this you move the decimal point two places to the left, so 20.0% = .2) then multiply be the number you want to take a percentage of. So .2*1000 is finding 20% of 1000. Do this in your head or on a calculator, you should get 200.
So: 200 people out of 1000 (20%) knew their congressional representative.
