Things on either side of the = are just that, equal, or the same, so we can substitute one side for the other.

-5x + 3(-5x - 1) = -23

-5x - 15x - 3 = -23

-20x = -20

x = 1

y = -5(1) - 1

y = -5 - 1

y = -6
