How is the word term defined when used to describe a ratio relationship ?

In my experience, a fraction is generally referred to as a single term. However, in working with complex fractions and rational numbers with polynomials, we may talk about working with individual terms within the expressions.

A term is one of the two numbers in the ratio; in the "ratio of a to b" a is the first term and b is the second term.

It is also used to indicate each one of the 4 numbers in a proportion.


If a = c

--- ----

b d then a, b c and d are the terms of the proportion.
