Hi Anisah,
To solve this problem, all you need do is to set up a proportional equation. To do so, you want the same units of measure on both numerators and denominators on both sides of that equation. For example, if you need to know how much saline is added to a compound, and you are given the original proportion, plus the problem is asking how much saline is needed to make a quantity that is given, a proportional equation works best, So, let me show you what I mean so it makes a bit more sense, "
212/14 = x/1
You will notice two ratios are set up here. First, and taken from the problem we are told the recipe calls for 212 pounds for every 14 cups of sugar. We expressed that as a ratio, okay? The second portion of the problem however, asks how many pounds of flour (expressed as x) for 1 cup of sugar. Also, please note that many students like to take a short-cut when determining this sort of answer, however proportional equations ensure accuracy which is why I personally recommend using them, and, in addition most students use proportions in other subject areas such as chemistry etc. Once you develop the proportional equation than you can cross multiply. So, let's look at this process a bit more. "
212/14 = x/1
This leads us to a new equation which is as follows:
212 = 14x When cross multiplying you are using the numerator from the left and multiplying it by the denominator on the right side of the equation, Also, the denominator from the left side is multiplied by the numerator on the right side, Now, let's solve the new equation.
14x = 212 <------Now, divide both sides of the equation by 14 to leave x to itself.
x = 15.14 or 15 14/100 or 15 7/50
I hope this helps and I wish you a great rest of your week. Best!
