let x be the number that competed on the 3rd day
2x is the number that competed on the 2nd day
1st day + 2nd day +3rd day = total number of dogs
87+2x+x=171
Subtract 87 from both sides and combine like terms
87+2x+x-87=171-87
3x=84
Divide both sides by 3
3x/3=84/3
x=28 (3rd day)
2x = 2(28) = 56 (2nd day)
