Hello, Cameron
The place value rules are the following. Find the place value you are looking for, in this case you want the hundreds place value. Look at the number to the right of this place value
a) if the number to the right of the place value you are looking for is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9, the number in that place value goes one up.
b) if the number to the left of the place value you are looking for is 0,1,2,3, or 4, the number in that place value stays the same.
Note: IT NEVERS GOES DOWN.. this is a mistake that a lot of my students make..
#1
6,269... the hundreds place value is 2. Now look at the number to the right of the two. The number is 6, so the 2 becomes 3 and any number to the right of becomes 0. So, 6,300 is the first number.
5,403... the hundreds place value is 4. Look to the right of the 4. The number to its right is 0. So, the 4 stays the same, and any other number to the right of the 4 become 0. S0, we have 5,400
1957.... the hundreds place value is 9. look to its right. There is a 5, so the 9 goes higher. So, this becomes 2,000
Now, adding 6300+5400+2000= 13700

4,267... the hundreds place value is 2. Now, look to its right. The number to the right of 2 is 6. So, the 2 becomes 3 and all other numbers to the right of 2 become 0. This becomes, 4,300.
2,738... the hundreds place value is the 7. Now look at the number to the right of 7.. It is 3. So, the 7 stays the same, while all the numbers to the right of 7 become 0. We end up with, 2,700.
Finally, lets subtract: 4,300-2,700= 1,600
Kind of long... just learn the rules and learn the place value, and you should be ok.. Take care.
Please rate my answer... :)
