Greetings! Lets solve this shall we?
Let the width be equal to (1/3)x, where the length is just x.
The perimeter is 20 so the perimeter equation is
2(x) + 2(1/3)(x) = 20
2x + (2/3)(x) = 20
(6/3)x + (2/3)x = 20...................from obtaining the common denominator. Then,
(8/3)x = 20.................Now we take the reciprocal of (8/3) to both sides to solve for x
x = 20(3/8)
x = 7.5
So, the length is 7.5 and the width is (1/3)(7.5) = 2.5
I hope this helped!
