Greetings! Lets solve this shall we?
This problem is more of knowing how to convert the words in a word problem into a mathematical equation! So lets do that!
Let,
x = quarters
(x+3) = dimes
(x+9) = nickels
Also, note that a quarter is 0.25, a dime is 0.10 and a nickel is 0.05. Then, the equation is set up as
0.25x + 0.05(x+9) + 0.10(x+3) = $3.55.............................................Now we can solve for x ! Then, we use the Distributive Property to solve for x. So
0.25x + 0.05x + 0.45 + 0.10x + 0.3 = 3.55
0.40x + 0.75 = 3.55....................Then we subtract 0.75 to both sides such that
0,40x = 2.80.......................Then we solve for x by dividing 0.40 such that
x = 7.
Now recall that
x = quarters...........7 Quarters
(x+3) = dimes...(7+3) = 10 dimes
(x+9) = nickels..(7+9) = 16 nickels
I hope this helped!
