I would first rewrite the improper fractions 3 2/3 and 3 3/4 as 11/3 and 15/4, respectively. The expression then becomes 11/3 x- 4/5(x-15/4). Now, distribute the 4/5 over the parenthesis. You now have the expression 11/3 x - 4/5 x + 3. Note: -4/5 times -15/4 is 3. To combine the like term 11/3 x and - 4/5 x , you need a common denominator which is 15. So, 11/3 x becomes 55/15 x and -4/5 x becomes -12/15 x. Then 55/15 x - 12/15 x is 43/15 x. Thus the expression 11/3 x - 4/5 x + 3 becomes 55/15 x - 12/15 x + 3 and simplifies to 43/15 x + 3.
