Greetings! Lets solve this shall we ?
Let the sum of two numbers be equal to 56 as x+y=56 and the difference be x-y=20. Now we have a system of linear equations. Now we solve them by the elimination method such that
x+y=56
x-y=20
-----------
2x = 76
x = 38...............................Then we plug 38 into the first equation as
(38) + y = 56
-38 -38
-----------------------
y = 18
I hope this helped !
