You can think about 1 inch as 8/8 inches (you could also think about it as 4/4 inches or 100/100 inches but those are not relevant to this problem). We think about 1 inch as 8/8 inches because the other size is given in eighths so (8/8 would give us a common denominator).
8/8 - 3/8 is a simple fraction subtraction problem - you keep the denominator (8) and subtract the numerators (8 - 3 = 5). so the answer is 5/8 inch longer
