I think you might have missed some of the words in the question. If the number of dogs and monkeys are the same and there were 35 total that would mean 17 1/2 of each, which doesn't really make sense. If it were 4 times as many dogs as monkeys then you could say something like the number of monkeys is x and then the dogs could be 4x (4 times as many). So, x + 4x = 35. 5x = 35. x = 7. Therefore the number of monkeys would be 7 and the number of dogs would be 28...
