Dave "The Math Whiz"
When dealing with fractions everything added together has to add up to 1. The amount eaten by Jane plus the amount eaten by Roger plus the amount left over has to add up to 1.
Let x = amt eaten by Jane = 5/12
y = amt eaten by roger = 4/12
z = amount left over
Eq.: x + y + z = 1
5/12 + 4/12 + z = 1
9/12 + z = 1
z = 1 - 9/12
z = 12/12 - 9/12 = 3/12 = 1/4
Therefore, there would be 3/12 or 1/4 of the pizza left.
Hope this helps!
