Hello Tessa. In order to solve this problem, we must multiply by -9 on both sides. We must do so because the opposite operation of division is multiplication. Multiplying by -9 on both sides of the equation also gets rid of the -9 in the denominator of the ratio on the left side of the equation. Doing so yields:
x/-9= -16
-9(x/-9) = -16 x -9
x = 144
