The question you want to answer is "How many points does he average per game?" So start with what you know. 14 points is 6 points higher than his average. So we could write 14 is 6 points higher than p.
So in math sentence we might say 14 = p + 6.
(We could also write 14-6 = p, but that is not exactly what the English sentence says above)
Now we just solve for p. Subtract 6 from each side of the equation to get p alone by itself.
14-6 = p + 6 -6
