A recent concert at Gordon College had a paid audience of 987 people. Advanced tickets were $9.95 and tickets at the door were $12.95. Ticket sales totalled $10,738.65. How many of each type were sold?

Let x = the number of advanced tickets.  Let y = the number of tickets at the door.

 

x + y = 987

 

9.95x + 12.95y = 10,738.65

 

We can multiply both sides by 100 to get rid of the decimals.  995x + 1295y = 1,073,865

 

Now, take the first equation and solve for either x or y.  Let's do x.  x = 987 - y.

 

Substitute this x in the 2nd equation.  995(987 - y) + 1295y = 1,073,865.

 

Solve for y, then plug that value back into the first equation to get your x.  I know you can do it!
