Nice solution David ! I used to give a similar tricky problem like this to my 7-th grade students: If there are 8 people at a party and everybody shakes hands with everybody else exactly one time, how many different handshakes will there be ? That was easy to add ; 7+6+5+4+3+2+1=28. Looking at your solution, that's a good way to add the numbers together, which reminds me of another problem:what is the sum of the first 100 odd numbers ? 1+199, 3+197, etc. In your addition you have an odd number of numbers, 39. There are only 19 pairs that equal 40, and one middle number which is 20. The sum, as you know, is 40*19+20=780. Again, nice solution; it brought back some good school teaching memories.
