The equation is given in Standard Format (Ax+By=C).
You may solve for y, once and forever, and remember that m, the slope in y=mx+b, is=(-A/B).
The slope of all perpendicular lines is the negative inverse, that is (B/A)
The equation of the perpendicular line is: (-1/3)x + y = C and we need point (-3,1) to solve for C.
(-1/3)(-3)+1 = C
2 = C
The equation of the line is (-1/3)x + y = 2.
However, by convention,Standard Form has integer coefficients and the x coefficient is positive. So, the equation is:
x - 3y = -6 [multiply all by (-3)]
Check: the slope is +1/3, which is the negative reciprocal of (-3).
Is (-3,1) on the line?
(-3) - 3(1) = -6 ?
-6 = -6 >yes
