Ever since the Reconquista of 1100 CE, the Moors (what the Spanish called the Muslims from N Africa - mostly Morocco) were in constantly battle with the combined forces of Queen isabella of Castille and King Ferdinand of Navarre. These northern kingdoms were the most Christian and the most heavily fortified and were the ones that felt most obligated to defend Christiandom from the advancement of the Muslims. Upon winning that last battle at Granada - the Catholic control of Spain was complete.
