Let x = the unknown number.
Four times the sum of three times a number increased by two = 4*(3x+2)
is equal to three times the difference of two times the number decreased by eight = 3*(2x-8)
4*(3x+2) = 3*(2x-8)
Distribute:
4*3x + 4*2 = 3*2x - 3*8
12x + 8 = 6x - 24
Combine like terms:
6x = -32
Solve for x.
