Should a log function with parentheses and an exponent outside have the log computed first or the exponent?

I have the expression log(x+2)² and I am asking, should this be interpreted as (log(x+2))² or log((x+2)²)?

All online calculators interpret the notation the first way, but a math teacher disagrees.

My opinion:: log(x+2)² means log [(x+2)²].

If I wanted to write the square of the logarithm, I would write log²(x+2) or perhaps better yet

[log(x+2)]^2..

If there is ever any question, it is always better to use parentheses!
