The teachers at P.S. 125 are having a bake sale to raise money for  the Rlay for Life.
Ms. Amato baked 5 times as many as Ms Frank.
Ms. Silver baked 9 times as many as Ms Frank.
Ms. Bugatti baked 6 times as many as Ms Amato.
The total amount of cookies baked was 1,248.
- How many cookies did Ms. Bugatti bake?
- How many cookies did Ms. Frank bake?
- How many cookies did Ms. Silver bake?
- How many cookies did Ms. Amato bake?

Sarah, something is wrong with your problem.  If I work it out, I come out with not a whole number.  Please check your problem and we can help!

Here's what we know so far:
a = 5f (made 5 times as many as Ms. Frank)
s = 9f (made 9 times as many as Ms. Frank)
b = 6a (made 6 times as many as Ms. Amato)
a + b + s + f = 1248

Now we just start substituting our variable information:
5f + 6a + 9f + f = 1248
5f + 6(5f) + 9f + f = 1248
5f + 30f + 9f + f = 1248

Now that we have only fs, we can combine the terms and then isolate to fid how many Ms. Frank made:
45f = 1248

However, 1248 is not divisible by 45, so at least one number is off.

I agree with David.  I get 27.7 cookies for Ms. Frank but it is not a whole number.
