Consider the straight line equation x+2y-4=0.

a) The line is shifted 2 units left. Find the equation of the new line.

b) The original line is shifted 1 unit down. Find the equation of this third line.

x-4 = -2y

(x-4)/(-2) = y

y = (-1/2)x + 2

Shifted two units to the left , so ADDS 2 to the x.

y = (-1/2)(X+2) + 2

= (-1/2)X + -1 + 2

= (-1/2)X + 1

(b) shifts down by 1:

y = (-1/2)x + 1
