Hi Josh...hope you're having a great school week! This is a great question...and I'm here to help you. Just to let you know, I'm going to help you understand how to do these questions. If I simply give you the answer and you come up against one in a test....I won't be around to help you.
I'm going to give you the tools on how we address these kinds of problems.
If you look at these kinds of problems with these tools, then another kind of problem will not be as difficult. Here we go...just follow the steps:
Step 1: Re-write the original problem:
One number is 4 less than eleven times another number. The sum of the two numbers is 92. Find the numbers.
Step 2: Take each of the statements and identify specific words to make sure you understand what they mean...like this:
- One number is 4 less than eleven times another number. (What does this mean?)
- The sum of the two numbers is 92. (What does this mean?)
- Find the numbers. (What does this mean?)
Step 3: Identify each of the statements:
- One number is 4 less than eleven times another number. What this means is that 'some' number (an 'unknown') is 4 less than eleven times another number(another unknown). So...now we can name some items: one unknown is 'x' and the other unknown is 'y'. Or you can name them whatever you want.
- One part of the statement states: 'One number (which we said was 'x') is 4 less than eleven times another number (which we said was going to be 'x')
- Now this will look like this: What do you think this will look like...think...a number 4 less than a number...think like 4 less than...let's say 8...who would we write this...8 - 4...RIGHT?? So...we can write (x - 4)...this satisfies the 4 less ...RIGHT???
- The next part says...eleven times another number . What do you think that would look like? We said the other number was 'x'...so we can write x × 11 or another way would be 11x....RIGHT?? We can change that to (11x).
- One number is: (x - 4) and the other number is : (11x)
Step 4: The last statement states: The sum of the two number is 92...CORRECT??? So what does that mean? Do you Add? Subtract? Multiply? Divide? The key at working these kinds of problems is to know/understand what the terms/words mean!!!
- So to help you out I'll let you know we're going to ADD!!! The statement states the sum of the two numbers is 92, which means when we add our one unknown to the other unknown our answer will equal 92...RIGHT???
- So....that means when we add (x - 4) to (11yx) it should equal 92. We can re-write this like this: (x - 4) + (11x) = 92 You're still with me...RIGHT??
- We can re-write our NEW equation [make sure you know what the term equation means] without the paragraphs: x - 4 + 11x = 92
If you need any more help.
Follow these steps and examples and you will be able to answer many of these kinds of questions.
So now, I've help you set up the equation and lead you down the path to answering your question.
You can...should be able to the rest.
The last step is the most important step and that is to check you answer. Whatever answer you get, substitute it into the unknowns and if it is correct...one number is 4 less that the number you calculated and 11 times the other number, and when you add them together...when you add them together they will equal 92
