The "sum" means you are adding 2 numbers. Lets call the first number "x" and the second number "y". If one number is 6 more than the other, then we can say: y = x+6 therfore x + (x+6) = 26 x + x + 6 = 26 simple algebra tells us that when numbers cross over the "=", they either go from negative to positive, or vice versa. So now we can deduce this: x + x = 26 – 6 2x = 20 Next, lets find x by dividing both sides by 2 2x ÷ 2 = 20 ÷ 2 x = 10 Therefore the numbers are 10 and 16
