The total distance is the sum of the distance Sam has already biked plus the distance he still must cover.
Let D be the total distance. Then:
D = the distance already biked (1/4 x D + 12) plus the distance still to go (3/8 x D + 9).
D = (1/4)D + 12 + (3/8)D + 9
D - (1/4)D - (3/8)D = 12 + 9
(8/8)D - (2/8)D - (3/8)D = 21
(3/8)D = 21
I'll leave it to you to solve for D.
