40 = 0(.25) + x(.25) + y(.50)
Here you have two unknowns, score on test 2 and score on test 3. But, you have only one equation. Therefore, it can not be solved. For example, if 100% earned on test two, then, 100 x .25 = 25 points out of the 40 desired. Therefore, student must earn another 15 points to reach 40. 15 = (.50)30.
But, if student earns 80% on test two, then (80)(.25) = 20, so student must now earn 20 more points to equal 40. 20 = (.50)(40).
