I believe this is asking to subtract 5/6 and 1/3.
You need to have the same denominator for all fractions you want to subtract.
Since 5/6 already has a multiple of 3, we need to modify 1/3.
1/3 needs to have a denominator of 6. We can do that by multiplying 1/3 by the equivalent of 1. Any number over that same number (2/2 or 5/5 or 123/123) all equal 1.
3 x 2 = 6 so that means we need to do 1/3 x 2/2 = 2/6
Then 5/6 - 2/6 = 3/6
3/6 can be simplified. Simplifying means finding the common multiple of both the numerator and denominator. The common multiple of 3 and 6 is 3.
3/3 = 1
6/3 = 2
The final answer is 1/2
