Area of a rectangle is length x width. If the area is 36 square yards, and the length is 4 times longer than the width, play around with numbers that make 36 when you multiply them together until you find two numbers that match the specifics of this problem. You will find that 3 X 12 will work. Twelve is four times bigger than three since 3 X4= 12. Therefore the length is 12 and the width is 3.
