The greater of two numbers is twice the lesser. If the greater is increased by 18, the result is 4 less than 4 times the lesser. Find the numbers

x = 2y

x + 18 = 4y - 4

Substitute:

2y + 18 = 4y - 4

2y = 22

y = 11

x = 22
