It's hard to deal with 1/6 cup, so let's start by multiplying by 6. That gives us 1 cup of butter for 24 servings. Then you set up two fractions. 1/24 (for one cup over 24 servings) and x/22 (for an unknown number of cups over 24 servings). So, 1/24 = x/22. Now you cross multiply. Multiply the top of the first fraction by the bottom of the second, and the bottom of the first by the top of the second.
1 x 22 = 24x
Since 1x22 = 22 . . . 22 = 24x
Now divide both sides by 24 to get the x by itself. 22/24 equals the number of cups of butter. You can reduce that fraction to 11/12 cup.
