The way you want to express the above is as follows:
3x - 5 = 10 <----Please note: Three times a number is 3x because you do not know the number.
3x = 15 <-----Add five to both sides of the equation.
x = 5 <-----Divide both sides of the equation by 3 and the solution is x = 5
If we want to check our work, which we should always do, just plug the value of 5 into the equation for x.
Therefore:
3(5) - 5 = 10
15 - 5 = 10
10 = 10
