You didn't give us the list of answers to choose from, but here's what it means.
- D(0.5) is the distance Alek walked in the first half hour
- D(1) is the distance Alek walked in the first hour
- D(1) - D(0.5) is the distance Alek walked in the second half hour.
So D(0.5) < D(1) - D(0.5) means the distance Alek walked in the first half hour is less than the distance he walked in the second half hour. So he walked a bit faster in the second half hour than he did in the first half hour.
Example:
D(0.5) = 2 km
D(1) = 5 km
D(1)-D(0.5) = 5 - 2 = 3 km
So Alek walked 2 km in the first half hour and 3 km in the second, totaling 2+3=5 km for the hour
