x+1 3x-1
------ = -------------
3 x+2
(x+1)(x+2) = 3(3x-1) <--- cross mutiplies
x^2 + 2x + x + 2 = 9x-3 <--- FOILs left side; DISTRIBUTIVE on the right!!!
x^2 + 3x + 2 = 9x - 3 <--- combines like terms
x^2 + 3x + 2 - 9x +3 = 0 <--- moves everything to left side
x^2 - 6x + 5 = 0
(x-5)(x-1) = 0
x-5 = 0 or x-1 = 0
x=5 or x=1
check
x=5:
left side: (5+1)/3 = 6/3 = 2
right side: (3(5)-1 )/(5+2) = (15-1)/(5+2) = 14/7 = 2
YES , 5 is a solution !!!
x=1: left side is 2/3; right side is also 2/3
check is left for you
