Hi Cassidy!
This is an example of when to use a Variable to solve the problem. This Variable just means any possible number. The Variable we are trying to solve for in this problem is how far the frogs jump. We can call it anything but lets call it X like most people do. (X is a variable not a multiplication sign)
So let's say that Al's frog jumps X inches. If we knew what X was we could find how far Fred's frog jumped because we know that Fred's frog jumped 7 times further. But this just means that Fred's frog jumped 7 times X inches or 7X.
We also know that together they jumped 56 inches. Well, Al's frog jumped X inches and Fred's frog jumped 7X inches so it seems that X + 7X = 56. This is the equation that we need to solve.
(X + 7X) = 56 becomes 8X = 56 because (X + 7X) = 8X
So 8X = 56
Now you just divide both sides of the equation by 8.
(8X ÷ 8) = X and 56 ÷ 8 = 7
So in the end you get X = 7. This means that Al's frog jumped 7 inches because that is what we said the variable was. But the question asks for how far Fred's frog jumped, not Al's frog. But that's easy! Remember that he jumped 7 times further so Fred's frog jumped 7 * 7 inches or 49 inches!
