I need help answering word problems?

A camel can drink 15 gallons of water in 10 minutes. At this rate, how much water can the camel drink in 12 minutes?

Just convert the clauses or sentences into math and solve.

 

The camel drinks 15 gallons in 10 minutes, so the average drinking rate r = 15/10 or 1.5 gallons/min.

 

Now in 12 minutes, the camel drinks (rate) (time) = 1.5(12) = 18 gallons of water.

You can set up this problem as a proportion.  gallons/ minutes.

 

You can set up this problem using proportions 4 different ways.  I am going to do it one way only.  Hey, they are closing the library !!

 

(15 gal/ 10 min)= (x gallons/ 12 min)

 

multiply:

 

(15 gal) (12 min)= (x gal)(10 min)

         180= 10x

            x=18

The camel can drink 18 gallons of water in 12 minutes.
