Question

Marietta is selling cheeses for the holiday fundraiser. On Monday, she sold 7/9 of the boxes of cheeses. On Tuesday she restocked her supply and sold 0.85 of the boxes of cheeses. On which day did Marietta sell more boxes?

 

Could someone explain what and how to solve the problem. Thank you. And you don't have to give me the answer, but if you don't could you give an example some what really similar. I would really appreciate that.

 

And whoever helps and answers that you so much.

To figure out if Marietta sold more cheese on Monday than on Tuesday, we need to compare the amount of cheese she sold on both days.  However, comparing 7/9 with 0.85 is like comparing cheese with butter: they both come from milk, but are different stuff.  In order to compare two things, they must be of equal nature.  You see?  7/9 is a ratio that indicates 7 parts out of 9; and 0.85 is a decimal that indicates 85 parts out of hundred.  In order to compare them, you need to transform the ratio into decimal, or viceversa; the decimal into ratio.

 

To transform 7/9 into a decimal number, just divide 7÷9≈0.78

 

Now you can compare: Marietta sold 0.85 of the boxes on Tuesday and about 0.78 of the boxes on Monday...

I will say: On Monday she sold 7/9=0.77 of the boxes of cheeses

                On Tuesday she sold 0.85 of the boxes of cheeses

 

Because  0.85 >0.77 then Tuesday was the day she sold more boxes.
