Train 1 travels at rate r, in 2 hrs has gone r*(2 hr) miles

Train 2 travels at rate r+20, in 2 hrs has gone (r+20)(2 hr) miles

The total distance is 440 miles

 

r(2) + (r+20)(2) = 440

 

Distribute, add like terms, and solve for r. Don't forget to also find the speed of train 2.
