Without the absolute value it doesn't work.  Do you mean the difference of 2 and 6 is less than 1. Without absolute value the difference is -4, which is less than 1. However, we know that the difference is actually 4.    The solution is 5<x<7.  Absolute value is needed to get to that solution.
