Elizabeth,
Here are a few tips to help you subtract. I assume you already know how to count and how to add.
100 is really also 90 + 10 , and subtract
25 is really also 20 + 5 , so do the easier take aways (subtractions) in each column, then add the column results

70 + 5 = 75, so 100 - 25 = 75
Now, you can only add or subtract "like" things: 2 numbers, 100 apples - 25 apples = 75 apples.
But, 100 apples - 25 oranges is undefined since an apple and an orange are different.
But if a problem also says that an orange is like or equivalent in some sense to 2 apples (so defines them),
then you can perform a conversion and 100 apples - 25 oranges = 100 apples - 25(2)apples = 50 apples.
