Suppose there is a 1.4°f drop in temperature for every thousand feet that an airplane climbs into the sky. If the temperature on the ground is 57.2°f, what will be the temperature when the plane reaches an altitude of 7,000ft?

The slope is -1.4/1000 = -0.0014

 

The intercept is (0,57.2) <--- y -intercept means x=0

 

The linear function is y = -0.0014x + 57.2

 

At 7000 feet, y = 47.4
