The key to using the negative exponents is to realize that you are taking the reciprocal of the value that is being raised to the negative exponent.
An example that may further your understanding is suppose (2/3)-1. The reciprocal of (2/3) is (3/2) and so we have (3/2)1 or more simply 3/2.
