William Shakespeare wrote 37 plays, including tragedies, comedies and histories. He wrote the same number of tragedies and histories, but the number of comedies he wrote is 3 less than twice the number of tragedies.

Let x = the number of histories

2x - 3 = the number of comedies

x + x + 2x - 3 = 37

4x = 40

x = 10 tragedies and 10 histories

2x - 3 = 2(10) - 3 = 17 comedies
