If you factor out the GCF (3 since 24=3*8 and 9=3*3, there is a 3 as a factor of both 24 and 9), you will be left with an expression that uses the distributive property.
24+9
3*8 + 3*3
3(8 + 3)
Notice: 24 + 9 = 33
and 3(8+3)=3(11)= 33
These two expressions are equivalent.
