a cattle dealer bought a certain number of steers for 1260$. Having lost 4 of them, he sold the rest for 10$ a head more than they cost him, and made $260 by the entire transaction. How many steers did he buy?

Let x be the number of steers bought. The total spent was 1260.

 

Your dealer gets $10 (x-4) in sales. ($10/steer, with 4 less than he bought originally.)

The total amount made is the original expenditure plus $260, $1260 + $260 = $1520

Set this equal to the expression for the sales amount, and solve for x.
