P = 2(L + W)

 

L = 2W + 8   Substitute this equation into the perimeter equation, you get

 

34 = 2(2W + 8 + W)

 

34 = 2(3W + 8)

 

34 = 6W + 16

 

18 = 6W

 

W = 18/6 = 3 cm
