Let l represent the number of lilies
1) l+ d= 55 He has a total of 55 flours
2) d= l+ 19 He has 19 more dandelions than lilies
Now, I am going to substitute l+19 for d into equation #1 above.
1) l + d = 55
l + (l+ 19)= 55 Combining like terms
2l + 19 = 55
-19 -19
2i = 36. Dividing by 2
l= 18
He has 18 lilies and 37 dandelions.
