whats the value of p if 5/6 -1/3n is equivalent to p(5-2n)

find the value of p so the expression 5/6 -1/3n is equivalent to p(5-2n), explain the steps you took and how you found p.

I'm just not sure how you thought to multiply by 6 in the first place?  Also, if the 5-2n on both sides cancel each other out, how does it come out 1 = 6p?  Where did the one come from?  Argh.......

6 is the LCM of 6 and 3, divide both sides by (5-2n), on the left (5-2n)/(5-2n)=1

It all depends on how student writes the problem.  The second fraction (1/3n) is either (1/3  *  n  or n/3)  or it can be written as 1/(3n).  Depends how student gives or expresses the problem, it changes the answer (outcome).

you can't have 2 completely different answers. one is p = 1/6 and the other is 5n - 2 = p divided by 6n (5-2n). How do we know which one is the CORRECT answer. In math, it's either right or it's wrong. You can't have 2 completely different answers.

Hi Catherine,

Depends how equation is expressed, it can lead to different answers.  What is an actual/original equation:

5  _   1     =   p (5-2n)
6      3n

OR

5/6-(1/3)n=p(5-2n) which can be written as:

5   _  1 (n)    =  p (5-2n)     -->       5  _   n  =   p (5-2n)
6       3                                          6       3

Which equation is the actual equation? first one or second one?

I forgot to cancel (5n - 2) which it will be 1/6n = p  if second term is 1/(3n).  If second term (1/3n) is 1/3  *  n  or n/3, then p = 1/6 like Author has it.
