So you subtract 4.5 from 39.08. Then you subtract 14.9 from that. 

 

So

 

39.08-4.5=34.58

Then 

34.58-14.9=19.68

If you cut two 4.5yd pieces and two 14.9yd pieces each, then you will be left with 0.28yd of wood.

 

4.5*2 = 9  &  14.9* 2 = 29.8       29.8+9 = 38.8   39.08-38.8 = 0.28

 

But if you only cut 1 piece each, then you will be left with 19.68yds of wood.
